Last night, we tried Pican in downtown Oakland with Ainsley’s college friend and her husband. We got there slightly early and waited in the bar area- cool light fixtures, comfortable seats, good music. They did have two TVs playing football which was a downside for me. Ains got a Tennessee Margarita which basically had whiskey instead of tequila.

We were seated in the dining room which has a variety of tables with the kitchen staging area overlooking the room. The menu had enough exciting options that it was difficult to choose. The menu is basically a fancy/foodie take on Southern staples. In the end, I think I made some boring choices. I started with a Magnolia salad. It was a perfectly lovely salad but nothing  to die for. I then had the one vegetarian option (none of the fish choices really grabbed me) which was solidly good, but again no fireworks.

The highlights for me was the Lavendar infused Lemon Drop and the Mac and Cheese that came with Ainsleys chicken. The Mac was made with Gouda and served in an individual skillet. Yum-Ville-USA.

I would go again, but am not going to pick this as one of my top meals of the year.
